“Green” Pet Owning

According to
the
United States Humane Society,
approximately 74.8 million
dogs and 88.3 million cats currently
inhabit U.S. homes, meaning household pets are important consumers of valuable
resources in many families. Here are tips on making your pet owning experience a
“green” one.
Adopt a Pet Don't add
to overpopulation! You can find many puppies, kittens and pure breed dogs and
cats at shelters
also!

Spay and Neuter There are already so
many animals in the shelters and not enough homes. So do not add to the problem!
Find a
Local Vet
If you live more than 10 miles away from your current vet, consider finding a veterinarian in your
community.
Recycle
Food Containers
Chances are your pet’s food containers can be recycled.

Make
Waste Disposal Environmentally Friendly
Biodegradable bags provide an alternative to plastic bags that are nearly
impossible to decompose.
Buy Your
Pet Sustainable Toys
Try eco-friendly beds, hemp collars, or toys made from recycled soda bottles.
Investigate Healthy Food Alternatives
Organic and all natural pet food is made with renewable resources and no pesticides or
environmentally unfriendly fertilizers.

Most kitty litter is made of clay from the earth so try to find some that is
recycled.

the environment. It means less trips to the store, and less wasteful packaging.
It is also cheaper to purchase in bulk.

Water Conservation Try a handheld attachment
that turns on and off instead of leaving water running during bath to decrease
the amount of water used. Also, try using grooming products that are
phosphate-free and free of chemicals to make dirty bath water eco-friendly!
